Beckett Rankine has been shortlisted for International Project of the Year in the Ground Engineering Awards 2024! Nectar Sierra Leone Bulk Terminal Berth Expansion project in Freetown has been recognised for delivering geotechnical excellence and standing out on the international stage.
The Freetown NSBT Berth Expansion project in Sierra Leone demonstrates how substantial modern port construction projects can be achieved in developing West Africa, in the face of multiple geotechnical and local challenges, utilising creative and sustainable solutions.
The project contains a wide range of geotechnical design elements including a steel cofferdam, dredging and reclamation campaign, hydraulic filling, rock revetments and ground improvement. Interesting challenges were presented by the complicated ground conditions, combined with the local environment limiting the availability of plant and skill sets, materials and overall climate conditions. However, these challenges allowed for unique innovation to develop a project that was overall flexible and simple to construct within the constraints of the project budget and timescales.
The new 3rd Berth at QEII terminal is a critical piece of infrastructure which will facilitate a larger class of vessel size to call at the Freetown terminal, accommodating vessels of 225 meters and 13 meters draft. Freetown is home to the West African Coast’s largest natural harbour. The historic port is a bustling hub of import-export and a significant source of the country’s economic prosperity.
This project has been undertaken in partnership with Nectar Group, NSBT, Beckett Rankine, Eiffage Génie Civil Marine, and A-squared Studio Engineers Ltd.

NSBT is a subsidiary of Nectar Group Ltd, a specialist privately owned bulk handling and terminal operator. Nectar Group’s history in Sierra Leone can be traced back to the 1980s and it has been operating the bulk and break-bulk terminal at the Port of Freetown since 2015, following a successful international tender. The past six years have seen substantial investments, improving the terminal’s facilities and productivity to support the Sierra Leone Port Authorities’ desire to further progress the port.
