Improving bulk handling hoppers is not just a maintenance task; it is a strategic investment in safety, uptime and throughput that directly shapes terminal performance and customer confidence.
Nectar Mozambique recently completed a hopper project as part of a larger initiative for smart asset improvements. Through targeted inspections and planned preventive maintenance, these improvements transform used equipment into reliable, high‑productivity assets.
Recent hopper improvements:
- Asset modification and full refurbishment
- SAT-RET bearings to rollers
- New chutes
- Asset modification and full refurbishment
- Structure reinforcement with stiffeners, gussets and welding reinforcement
- Additional safety devices
- Flow aid maintenance
Nectar’s shift to SAT‑RET bearings on rollers, coupled with all‑electric hopper configurations, illustrates how a robust PPM regime can support components that are designed for lower lifecycle costs and allows higher reliability.
By identifying wear points and weaknesses early, the team were able to reinforce critical areas with stiffeners, gussets and welding upgrades, keeping the hopper safe under heavy, continuous loading. Adding and upgrading safety devices at the same time protects both the asset and operators, reducing unplanned stoppages caused by overloads, misalignment or mechanical damage.
Asset improvement projects close the loop by tackling cargo handling bottlenecks. Installing new, optimised chutes reduces spillage and process loss while increasing discharge rates, directly improving vessel turnaround and cargo quality.
Structural reinforcement and refurbishment across the unit extended the hopper’s life.
Equipment refurbishment allows terminals to handle growing volumes without the capex burden of full equipment replacement.
Discover the benefits:
- Fully cleaned, inspected & increased equipment lifecycle
- Higher reliability with fewer breakdowns and unplanned stoppages
- Improved loading/unloading rates and overall terminal throughput
- Enhanced structural integrity and stability under heavy loads
- Better operator safety through upgraded guards, devices and access
- Cost reductions due to increased reliability
- Improved environmental performance from reduced dust and material escape
- Productivity increases and low process loss
- Stronger customer confidence due to safer, more consistent operations
For ports and terminals, a disciplined programme of inspections, PPMs and incremental upgrades can unlock more capacity from existing bulk handling hoppers and cargo handling equipment than many new-build projects.
