On 20 August, the city of Beira celebrated the anniversary of its elevation to city status in 1907. Originally known as the settlement of Chiveve, Beira has developed into a vital maritime and commercial gateway, connecting Mozambique with regional and international markets.
As a major port city, Beira plays an important role in the movement of containers, dry bulk commodities, grain and other cargoes throughout Mozambique and the wider Southern Africa hinterland.
